Home Education and Music

A Brief Guide for Those Wishing to Educate their Children at Home and How Music May Contribute…

Why I Have Written This Guide…

Through an odd twist of fate I found myself home educated between the ages 12 and 15. I then went on to work in formal education, teaching music in schools, colleges and universities between the years 2003 and 2015. I have also worked as an external examiner and departmental manager, so have a good understanding of the relevant regulatory requirements too. Therefore, I have found myself on ‘both sides of the fence’ in the home education debate and have some well-formed ideas/opinions on music education and the ways in which it can be implemented successfully.

Types of Music Education’in the UK – Some Pros and Cons.

Music education tends to take two forms in the UK – private one-on-one lessons (like the services I provide!) working towards graded instrument or theory exams or formal institution-based qualifications such as; GCSE and A Level Music in schools, vocational BTEC qualifications at colleges, or BA and BMus undergraduate degrees at universities, usually delivered as part of a class/group.

Each has their pros and cons. For example, the one-on-one development of instrumental technique provided by an private tutor is a sure-fire way of a student becoming accomplished at a particular instrument. Whereas the broader themes of developing listening skills, musical language and composition technique are dealt with within the GCSE, BTEC and A Level syllabuses. Class-based scenarios also have the benefit of offering group/ensemble performance opportunities. So maybe school is the best/only option…?

My Experiences…

I left my last Head of Music job for two reasons; the continuing reduction in funding/hours to deliver the qualifications and the fixation with targets and statistics. This can be summarised thus:

In 2003:
  • A full time music student would be in lessons 4 days a week (with a teacher present at all times). This included one-on-one instrument tuition.
  • I would teach approximately 13 lessons a week with 1,5 hours to plan each class.
  • If a student failed it was regarded as their fault and the onus would be on them them to improve. If a student was being disruptive, never attended or continued to fail the teacher could withdraw them from the qualification and focus on the students who wanted to learn.
band 2And in 2015
  • Full time music student = 3 days a week (with a teacher present half the time). One-on-one instrument tuition is no longer provided.
  • A teacher is now required to teach approximately 17 lessons a week with 45 minutes to plan each class.
  • If a student is failing the teacher is responsible for generating an action plan etc. A student who drops-out or fails would hit the overall success rate for the qualification, statistics which the teacher is ultimately responsible for.

The net result of these changes was less contact time with students (teaching them!), less time to plan interesting lessons and write meaningful feedback and more time chasing students who often didn’t want to be in classes in the first place. Ultimately quality suffered, making the job unfulfilling.
